■ Straight branch: This particular branch is 1" (25mm) dia. x 2" (51mm) long. The ideal branch for a simple owl is half as thick as it is long. Naturally, a branch with a smaller diameter will make a smaller owl.

■ Woodburner or pen (optional)

1 Slightly less than a third of the way from one end of the branch, cut three V-notches: one in the center and one on each side. Repeat the notches on the other end. As you push in with the knife, slide it slightly as well; sliding the knife makes it cut more easily.
